Surviving Lost Luggage
Surviving Lost Luggage
It seems to happen to every traveler at least once: lost luggage. Luggage is most usually lost on plane trips, but even traveling by train, bus or car you can lose your bags. It might be as innocent as leaving one case in a taxi. In the worst cases, sometime baggage is stolen, even right out of a hotel room.
But no matter how the bag gets lost, there are some strategies for surviving the loss, enjoying a vacation even without bags, and recovering your lost property.
Basic Living
While in transit, always keep your life's absolute necessities with you. Your carry-on or backpack should hold your wallet and ID, prescriptions, glasses and tickets. Some travelers even recommend keeping these necessities in a little pouch around your neck to guard against theft. If you have at least a credit card and ID, you can be sure to at least always have a roof over your head, even in the most unpleasant travel mishaps.
Most people also choose to keep cameras and cellphones in their hand luggage since these items are fairly expensive to replace.
Once you are in your hotel room, put the necessities in the room's lockbox for safety.
Vacationing Without Luggage
Trying to travel without your carefully packed bag seems like a nightmare. In many ways it is quite scary. It can be a real emergency if that lost luggage contained the suit or uniform you must have for your trip.
However, if your trip is a vacation, the lost luggage can help create a memorable trip. Give yourself permission to go on a little shopping spree; everything from coats to underwear becomes your vacation souvenir. If it is an overseas trip especially, exploring the shopping options with the locals can be an interesting tourist experience. Buy an inexpensive bag to haul it all home in.
Recovering What Is Yours
Airlines have different rules about how they handle lost luggage. If your luggage becomes permanently lost, you will be reimbursed at a set rate per pound of luggage, capped at a few hundred or thousand dollars, depending on the airline. Most people end up rather unhappy with the settlement.
If your luggage has simply been delayed, most airlines will deliver it to your door as quickly as possible, even the same day. For that reason, it is important to put your home and hotel addresses on your bag and keep a copy in your pocket - so you know where to have your lost luggage sent!
